Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya
Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva (1449-1568) was a remarkable polymath who significantly transformed and modernized Assamese society through his principles of equality. His contributions spanned various domains, including religion, literature, music, dance, drama, architecture, and social reform. He translated a substantial portion of the Bhagavata Mahapurana into Assamese and is recognized as the first playwright in any Indian language apart from Sanskrit. Sankaradeva authored over 26 scriptures, primarily in Assamese, along with works in the Brajawali dialect and one in Sanskrit. Additionally, he composed numerous songs, including the Borgeets. His disciple Madhabadeva aptly referred to him as SARVAGUNAKARA. His philosophical outlook was distinct from other Hindu philosophies, emphasizing humanism and inclusivity, as he welcomed individuals of all castes, creeds, and genders into his community. He was also a trailblazer in adult education and mass communication, advocating for the education of women and marginalized groups.
Sankaradeva established a new artistic movement, initiating a novel style of painting during his groundbreaking drama festival, Chihna-Yatra, in 1468 A.D., where he created imaginative depictions of heaven for stage backdrops. He promoted the illustration of his manuscripts with visual representations of stories from the Bhagavata. The Namghar he founded has evolved into a multifaceted institution and a symbol of Assamese culture. His influence extended across various regions of the Indian subcontinent, evident in the Yatra of Bengal, the scroll paintings of Odisha, and the theatrical traditions of Mithila.
The Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya was officially established on June 10, 2014. Although the University operates under the Private University Act, it is intended to serve as a people's university, catering to the needs of the entire population of Assam and India. Situated in Nagaon, a region that has been graced by the saint's presence for over fifty years, as he spent a significant portion of his life in Bardowa, Nagaon, the institution is deeply rooted in this heritage. The community associated with Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya is committed to fostering a new era of social renewal emanating from this University.
